Imposter Syndrome Is Real. So Are Imposters.
On telling the discomfort of not knowing yet apart from the discomfort of a gap you haven't closed. AI makes both feelings harder to tell apart.
Dear younger me,
You’re going to hear a lot about imposter syndrome. People will talk about it like it’s the great hidden tax of the profession. And it is real.
But here’s the part no one says out loud.
So are imposters.
You didn’t have the language for this yet, so everything uncomfortable felt the same. Doubt felt like failure. Uncertainty felt like exposure. You assumed that if you felt out of place, it meant you didn’t belong.
That wasn’t always true.
Sometimes what you were feeling was calibration. You were encountering complexity faster than confidence could keep up. That’s not weakness. That’s contact with reality.
Other times, though, the discomfort came from something else. From gaps you hadn’t closed yet. From skills you hadn’t built. From understanding you thought you had but didn’t. That’s different. And pretending those two feelings are the same slows growth in both directions.
This matters because environments like design reward fluency early. You learn the tools. You learn the language. You learn how to sound right. Feedback comes quickly on how things look and feel. It comes much later on whether the decisions actually held up.
AI makes this harder to tell.
It can produce confident output instantly. It can smooth over rough edges and make unfinished thinking sound complete. That doesn’t create imposters, but it lets them hide longer. It also makes capable people doubt themselves sooner, because surface-level signals stop being reliable.
You’ll see both patterns repeat.
Some people will mistake confidence for competence and stop learning too early. Others will mistake uncertainty for failure and stop trusting their judgment just as it’s forming. Sometimes, inconveniently, both of those people will be you.
If you don’t learn to tell the difference, a few things happen quietly. Weakness gets concealed instead of addressed. Strength gets muted instead of tested. Feedback becomes harder to interpret because everything looks polished before it’s sound.
So pay attention to what kind of discomfort you’re feeling.
Is it the unease of not knowing yet, or the resistance of something you’ve avoided learning? One points forward. The other asks for work. Neither is a verdict.
