Good Work Doesn't Move on Its Own.

Dear younger me,

You’re going to want to believe that good work speaks for itself.

It’s a comforting idea. It suggests that if you focus hard enough, stay principled enough, and do your job well, the right decisions will naturally follow. When that doesn’t happen, it will feel unfair. Personal, even.

It isn’t.

Here’s what you couldn’t see yet: politics are not an exception to the work. They are part of the environment the work lives in. Decisions are made by people, under incentives, with histories and pressures you don’t always see. Ignoring that doesn’t make the work purer. It just makes influence invisible.

This matters because effort and authority are not the same thing. Being right doesn’t guarantee being heard. Producing more doesn’t guarantee direction changes. Most organizations don’t fail because no one had good ideas. They fail because the right ideas weren’t positioned to survive.

AI doesn’t change this.

It flattens effort. Everyone can generate decks, artifacts, and rationales at speed. What it doesn’t flatten is power. Fewer people still decide what matters, what waits, and what ships. In louder environments, positioning matters more, not less.

You’ll see how this plays out. Thoughtful work will lose to better-timed work. Clear reasoning will get overridden by louder priorities. When that happens repeatedly, cynicism starts to feel reasonable.

If you don’t learn to account for politics, a few things happen quietly. You confuse fairness with impact. You mistake frustration for integrity. Eventually, you disengage while telling yourself you’re staying principled.

So pay attention to where decisions actually happen.

Who has to say yes? Who bears the risk if things go wrong? What incentives are shaping the conversation before you enter it? Understanding those things isn’t manipulation. It’s orientation.

Good work still matters. It just doesn’t travel on its own.
